Is becoming a carer right for me?
First of all, it’s important to honestly ask yourself if working in care is right for you. Although working in care is incredibly rewarding, it can also be challenging. Can you deal with frustrating or stressful situations with calmness and grace? Can you exercise patience and keep your cool when things get difficult? We look for people who are able to put themselves in others’ shoes and treat them with empathy and compassion. We also look for people who treat others with the respect, dignity and sensitivity they deserve.
Skills, experience, and qualifications required
To succeed as a carer, it’s more important to have the right attitude and values rather than specific qualifications or experience. We look for people who have an innate sense of empathy and are able to treat people in vulnerable situations with the respect they deserve. You must also be able to connect with others, build trust and foster real relationships. We provide comprehensive induction training, as well as extensive training as well as workshops along the way to ensure you feel supported in your career.
If you are interested in applying to be a private nurse, we look for 3 years of experience post-qualification as a minimum. We also require 2 professional references.
Starting your career
There are a few different paths you can take to get started in the care industry. A great way to initially get your foot in the door is through volunteering. This is a fantastic way to meet people in the care industry and get a feel for the type of work involved. Volunteering with an organisation that supports vulnerable people, such as a care home, charity, hospice or hospital, can help you determine whether you enjoy being in a caring role.
Another way to get involved is by taking a college course or starting an apprenticeship.
Some examples of college courses include:
- Level 1 Certificate in Health and Social Care
- Level 2 Diploma in Care
- T Level in Health.
Both paths are a great way to grow your knowledge of the healthcare sector and healthcare issues. Finally, you can apply directly. If you choose this route, it will be helpful to have at least some experience caring for others or working with people.
